Hiya all,

I am hoping to fit a point at work (you cannot have these fitted under the government grant), trying to work out if its going to be cost effective. Does anybody know how many kwh (units) it take to fully charge the battery from flat? My thinking is that it works out that the electric at work is about 11p per unit, total number of units to fill x 11p will give me the cost to travel around 25 miles (give or take a few).

I have worked out at current petrol prices it will cost about £4.17 to travel 25 miles at a MPG of 25 and £1.10 per litre.

I wonder how it compares???

Thanks
Jamie

PS
Loving the car, has been worth the wait. So many gadgets!

Hi Jamie, congratulations on your purchase.
I'm not exactly sure how many units it would take, but I would think between 8 and 9 kWh.
I charge mine from solar PV most of the time (daytime obviously) and will check on the meter associated with the tethered charger next time and advise.

That would be great if you could give me a definite figure. That makes it about £1 per full charge I think, about 4 times cheaper than fuel :) I think it will be definitely worth putting in a charge point circa £350 + VAT, plus the time for the electrician to install.

Thanks

I think you are both spot on. At 10p per kWh it will be about 80-90p for a full charge. With some heat losses and other inefficiencies one would expect to pay around £1 for a charge.

The new OLEV scheme in the UK came into effect on the 12th of April and will run until March 2016. It provides a £700 grant if certain conditions are met. There are some deals available to have a 16A unit installed for £195 or a 30A unit (fast charger) for £95 extra. This is inclusive of vat and installation. I have had a fast charger installed and one of the biggest benefits is the ease of use. The cables and charger that come with the car are sitting nicely in my garage!

Jamie, I have just charged from empty (0 miles range showing and mode just changed off EV mode) and checked the meter before and after, 28.5 kWh before and 36.0 kWh after, so a full charge in this case absorbed 7.5 kWh (+/- 0.2 kWh).

Cool, that probably works out about 80p for a full top up (depending on your charges)! Bargain!

Yes, if I was to use imported power from Ecotricity it would cost me 7.5 x 13.35 p/kWh = £1.00 but I charge using solar PV so it's free :D

Almost better than free due to the Feed in Tariff. We have PV at home, but unfortunately my E-tron is at work when the sun shines at least during the week. What we need is one of Elon Musk's home battery systems although they do look pricey.
